If you are launching a business concept, product, or making a personal profile page, it is advisable to buy your own domain on which your website can be hosted. You’ll get a unique URL that way. Your chances of getting ranked on Google and being found be people can increase drastically with a custom domain.
Get your domain name from providers like GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostinger.com, HostGator, and NameCheap.
If you are just testing your idea out and looking for feedback, you need to buy a domain name right away.
Step 1: Signing up, getting started
Visit Carrd.co, and sign up using your email id. You can start building without signing up too, by directly clicking on “Choose a Starting Point”.
You can find the button to sign-up after clicking the hamburger menu icon in the top right corner. On clicking that menu icon, you’ll get 6 options, one of which is the sign-up button. Making an account will allow you to save your progress.
If you want to just start building and make your account later, there’s an option for that too. You can do that by clicking on the “Publish” button in the top right options panel.
Step 2: Choosing a starting point – layout/theme
You get around 80+ pre-built themes and layout options to choose from, when you click on “Choose a starting point”
In your preparation stage, you’d have found out which kind of website it’s going to be. Carrd makes it easy for your to decide on the template by categorizing them based on use cases – Profile, portfolio, landing page, Sectioned website, and Forms.
But your options don’t end there.
You can choose to start from scratch, which will give you a blank canvas to start building your website in. This option is more suited for those of you who are versed in web design processes, trends, and fundamentals.
If you’re a seasoned product maker or designer, here are few things to keep in mind:
- The design and editing options are simpler, not too elaborate or deep.
- Breaking certain design conventions may not be possible in the pre-built templates.
For this blog, we have chosen to go with a pre-built theme of a personal profile.
Step 3: Knowing the platform and editing the elements
On finalizing and selecting the theme you want; you’d be directed to Carrd’s editing interface. This is your canvas where you can manipulate, edit, add and customize your theme and the on-page elements and configure buttons.
Pay close attention to the instructions screen, it gives a very important overview of all the options and the editor’s know-how. You can access all core features like adding elements, mobile-view toggle, animation, and more from the bar in the top right corner.
Click on “Okay, got it!” to proceed further.
The selected theme will have some placeholder text and pre-filled data, which you can start replacing with the content you prepared in step 0. To edit any element on the page, click on it, and it’ll open a side panel indicating all the options of the Editing, Appearance (the brush icon), and Settings. As you scroll down in that panel, you’ll get to modify various aspects of that element.
Step 4: Adding the background and the images
To add the visuals and graphic elements, click on the box element/space allotted for images. In the left-hand panel, you can proceed to upload the image of your choice.
There are more options for you to play around with as well. You can alt text to the image that you upload, it is a good SEO practice.
Adding the background involves similar steps. You can click on the area without the box element, which is your background, and the panel will direct you with options. For this blog, we have chosen the “Pick from Library” option, which has a really unique variety of background images.
The added images’ appearance has detailed customizations available. You can adjust their opacity, saturation, angle and more. This lets you make a wholesome mood of the website visually.
Step 5: Place the CTA buttons
You’d want visitors to take actions like subscribe to your content, updates, or explore your products (on another site like Shopify). For whatever behavior you want your visitors to take, you can add buttons.
For example, here this designer’s primary focus is to let clients find his work and let them book a meeting with him. You can either add a form (which is a pro feature) or add a button that directs them to a meeting scheduling app (like calendly.com).
In the customization panel, you can modify the buttons’ colours, the hover effect, and more. A bit detailed appearance modifications are also possible, you can find them in the Appearance section of the panel.
Step 6: Adding and managing sections
You can add sections to your website, by clicking on the “# Control” option in the elements menu. This lets you add more in-depth, relevant content and organize it based on priority.
In our example, this artist also sells his art in form of prints. We have added the “Gallery” element to showcase this. And to separate it from the pain hero section, we added a section break.
You can add other sections like “About” and “Contact” and more to make it a wholesome website. For each section there are relevant elements you can mix and match as well.
How To Make Multi-page Website With Carrd?
Though Carrd is a single-page website builder, you can simulate an effect that makes it feel like a multi-page website.
The secret lies in adding separate sections, and making them appear only when a visitor clicks on a particular button.
To do this, add a new section. After you have the sections you desire, add a button to each of these sections.
Configure the button’s URL to the section you want it to take the visitor to.
For example, on this website, our artist wants to sell his exclusive prints. We’ve added a section “#prints01”. And then we add one button on the home page (the first section), and label it “Get my exclusive prints”. In the side panel, in the URL, add #prints01 of the second section.
In the second section, where prints are showcased, add a “Home” button and configure it similarly with the URL #home. This way, visitors can go back to the home page after exploring the prints.
